On the blog with us today we have Taylor Seuss. Taylor and I actually went to high school and college together! Since graduating from The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, she has started Haute Fox Boutique. Haute Fox Boutique is an online women’s clothing boutique based in San Diego, California. Taylor seriously has cultivated some of the cutest clothes I have ever seen! She describes her boutique’s style as edgy and effortless, and I would totally agree. So let’s jump into this interview!
CIB: Taylor, welcome to Color It Blonde! I am so excited to start this interview, so why don’t we begin with you telling us a little bit about yourself and how you got into the fashion industry.
Taylor: My name is Taylor Seuss, I am 21 years old, and I was born & raised in San Diego, California. I have been in the fashion industry for 5 years now! My first retail job was at Ralph Lauren when I was 15. It was not my style by any means, but I remember that I was so excited!
CIB: Have you always been into fashion?
Taylor: I have always loved fashion! Growing up I would get more excited about “back to school shopping” than actually going back to school. I have always liked to keep up on trends, and tune into what celebrities were wearing. My favorite thing about the fashion industry is that it’s very fast paced! One day a trend is all the rage, and then the next day people can’t stand to look at it. It keeps me on my toes! My mom has great style and is very fashionable too, so I believe that influenced me as well.
CIB: Omg I loved back to school shopping hahaha! So obviously you carried this passion on and went to FIDM, what was your major again? Ugh, I miss college lol.
Taylor: Yes! I miss those days. I majored in Visual Communications. I chose this major because it was very well rounded. It focused mostly on visual display, but I took several classes on graphic design, social media marketing, public speaking, interior design, and event planning.
CIB: I remember all of the Visual students were always so stressed out because you guys had like a million projects due every week. That was the hardest part about FIDM, that it was project based. Literally SO many projects. Do you feel as though the education you received at FIDM helps you with your boutique?
Taylor: Absolutely! I couldn’t imagine not having it. The classes at FIDM really challenged me and pushed me outside my creative comfort zones.
CIB: So was Haute Fox Boutique always something that you wanted to do, or did you come up with the idea during your time at FIDM?
Taylor: I had always dreamt of having a women’s clothing boutique but I didn’t think it was going to come into fruition the way it did! After graduation most of the jobs that I was offered were very corporate, with little to none creative freedom. I didn’t think the office environment was very suitable for me – which long story short led to me launching Haute Fox Boutique.
CIB: How did you come up with that name? I seriously love it!
Taylor: Funny story! My mom came up with the name. I had several other names in mind but I am very glad I didn’t end up using them. Looking back they were so cringe – it would’ve been very embarrassing. Lol.
CIB: Hahahaha seriously same. When I was starting Color It Blonde, I came up with some TERRIBLE names. Thank god I didn’t use them. Having your own boutique must be so fun because I am sure you get to try so many amazing outfits. What is one piece of clothing that you couldn’t live without?
Taylor: Hmm… don’t get me wrong I’m all about fashion, but I think I would actually cry if yoga pants didn’t exist.
CIB: Again, same. What do you feel sets your brand apart from other online boutiques?
Taylor: I think something that sets Haute Fox apart from other online women’s clothing boutiques is the personal relationships that I have built with my customers! It makes me so happy & truly keeps me going!
CIB: What would you say has been the hardest part of starting your own boutique?
Taylor: I think the hardest part about starting a brand is separating yourself from others & standing out. The boutique industry is very saturated & competitive. For example, trends are trends – you can’t deny that! But sometimes it is better to weigh your options & take the road less traveled. I strive to provide my customers with unique items that you couldn’t get anywhere else.
CIB: I feel like that would take so much time and dedication to differentiate yourself from other brands and cultivate a ton of unique items. How has all of this changed your social/personal life?
Taylor: Personal life? What’s that? Kidding, haha. Kinda. I devote a lot of time to Haute Fox, there are no set business hours. I have skipped lots of weekend trips with friends, and girls nights out – but I have learned that as a business owner you have to prioritize. I always remind myself that nobody is going to put in the work for me, which is why staying focused is important. Everyday I wake up SO grateful that I get to do what I love! I have an amazing & supportive family that pushes me to be the best I can, too!
CIB: It is so great to have family there to pick you up and keep moving with you. What are some of the mistakes that you have made during this journey?
Taylor: Oh mannn. Several. Lots & lots. Too many, actually! But one thing that I have learned is always “trust your gut”. Your intuition is a real thing – never second guess yourself!
CIB: What do you think has been your biggest accomplishment throughout this journey?
Taylor: I would say my proudest accomplishment was the night that I launched Haute Fox Boutique. It was my 20th birthday, and I was so nervous. I had no business plan and was totally winging it (which I don’t know if I’d recommend that part), but it was surreal to see everything come together!
CIB: Do you see yourself expanding Haute Fox? Possibly to a brick and mortar location?
Taylor: I would like to grow Haute Fox by doing more pop-up events & gaining more of a following. Those were some of my goals for 2020! I am not planning on opening a brick and mortar location any time soon, but never say never!
CIB: Ok, let’s flash forward 10 years. Where do you see yourself and Haute Fox Boutique?
Taylor: 10 years. Omg. I hope that I am married and have kids. Living by the beach would be a plus too! Lol. I hope that Haute Fox is still growing its online presence, and I hope to have built several more customer relationships.
CIB: I love that!! This is my final and favorite question. If you could go back to the day that you came up with the idea for Haute Fox Boutique, knowing what you know now, what would you tell yourself?
Taylor: I love this question! I am quite the perfectionist and of course my own worst critic! I would tell myself to “breathe”. It sounds kinda silly, but it really is as simple as that. Everything always works out, you can’t sweat the small things. There will be good days and bad days, but the important thing is that you tried the best you can, and that’s all you can do.
This interview was so much fun, not only because Taylor is an old friend, but also because of how kick ass she is. Starting a boutique at 20 years old?! That’s seriously amazing. To wrap this all up I am going to link Haute Fox Boutique down below. Go check it out! Thank you again, Taylor for being on Color It Blonde today.
